Frequently Asked Questions
What is the timing of the conversion?
We will be converting your People’s United Bank accounts to Bar Harbor Bank & Trust accounts over the weekend of October 25-27, 2019. During conversion weekend, your accounts will officially be transferred to Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. During this weekend:
- Branches will close at 12:00 pm on Friday, October 25 and branches normally open on Saturday will be closed on October 26.
- You should activate and start using your new Bar Harbor Bank & Trust debit or ATM card on Friday, October 25, 2019.
- Bar Harbor Bank & Trust’s online, mobile, and telephone banking will be available at 8:00 am on Monday, October 28, 2019.
We apologize for any inconvenience you may experience during this weekend while we transfer your account. We encourage you to plan ahead by ensuring you have a secondary form of payment, such as cash or checks, available.
Will my account numbers and routing numbers change?
Your account number will not change, but your routing number will. Your new routing number is 011201759. To prevent future disruption to direct deposits and automatic payments, as of October 28, 2019 we encourage you to provide this new routing number to your direct deposit sources and to automatic payment recipients (such as utility or insurance companies).
What changes can I expect with Treasury Services?
If you are an existing People’s United Bank Treasury Services customer you will receive a separate communication regarding your services. Additionally, a local Bar Harbor Bank & Trust team member will reach out to you directly to discuss your services and next steps.
What will happen to my checks?
In the coming weeks, you will receive a separate mailing explaining how to order new checks. To ensure uninterrupted access, it is important to order your checks as soon as you receive the mailer. Once received, you can begin using your new checks on October 28, 2019. After October 28, 2019, you should destroy your People’s United Bank checks. If you’d prefer, you can bring them into your branch and the branch will assist you with destroying them.
What will happen to my transaction history?
Prior to conversion, we recommend that you download and store any historic data related to your People’s United Bank accounts that you may want to access after conversion. Some historic transaction history will be available in Bar Harbor Online in the weeks after conversion, but we always recommend you back up any data you may need as a precaution.
I have deposits at both People’s United Bank and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, how does FDIC deposit coverage work?
For the six months immediately following conversion (October 28, 2019), any funds previously held at People’s United Bank will be separately insured from any accounts previously held at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, ie. each portion of deposits will be insured for $250,000. After six months, you may qualify for more than $250,000 in coverage at one insured bank or savings association if you own deposit accounts in different ownership categories. The most common account ownership categories for individual and family deposits are single accounts, joint accounts, revocable trust accounts, and certain retirement accounts. Visit the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) for detailed information: https://edie.fdic.gov/
